Reading is both a virtue and duty.

MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE was established by the artist, writer, and editor Sharon Kivland in 2015. The publications are modest yet attractive. The press has grown unexpectedly. The Editor invites authors she considers to be good readers. She agrees with Nabokov that a good reader, a major reader, an active and creative reader, is a re-reader. She knows her writers and they know her, even when they have not yet met. They have read each other, or believe themselves to have done so. They are flirtatious, ruffling pages. She likes those who do not hesitate to buy the books she publishes, but under certain circumstances will make excuses for those who do not. She promises to do her best. The best is reading.

‘Je veux un travail élégant et érudit, avec un aspect modeste et pourtant agréable à contempler. Je veux un contenu léger et néanmoins sérieux’.

An interview with the Editor by Valérie Toubas et Daniel Guionnet © Point contemporain  is published here.

We are delighted to be mentioned in an interview with Amina Cain in the  Paris Review.

AT THE MOMENT THE SENDING OF ORDERS IS SLOW AS   THE EDITOR IS  IN FRANCE, HAVING RETURNED HOME ON THE LAST FLIGHT FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. SHE  IS RELYING ON A KIND FRIEND TO POST BOOKS FOR HER. THERE MAY BE DELAYS, SHE FEARS, AND SO  OFFERS  COST OF POSTAGE FOR ONE BOOK NO MATTER HOW MANY BOOKS ARE ORDERED – AN OFFER THAT SHOULD BE SNAFFLED UP WHILE IT LASTS. WHY BUY ONE BOOK WHEN YOU COULD BUY THREE?

Editor: Sharon Kivland
Editorial Assistant: Juliette Pépin

We regret (a little) that we are unable to accept unsolicited proposals. If you insist on sending something, do make sure that you have bought a number of our books before you do so, as this will curry favour and provoke less rolling of our eyes.

A note to readers:  This  tasteful and practical limited edition book bag , produced on the occasion of the exhibition by Sharon Kivland, Jamais fille chaste n’a lu de romans, at Circuit, Centre d’art contemporain, Lausanne, 2019, is now available here. Buy it and fill it up with delightful reading material. The Editor may even be moved to chuck in another book gratis. There is only one remaining, but MA BIBLIOTHEQUE will soon be launching its own book bag, with a quotation from Sylvain Maréchal’s tract on why women should not be taught to read.
